TAX CREDITS FOR WORKING FAMILIES AND TAX HELP COLORADO
The Piton Foundation considers tax credits for working families, especially the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), to be important tools for increasing the economic self-sufficiency and financial independence of Colorado's low- to moderate-wage workers. One of the nation's most effective anti-poverty programs, the EITC helped more than 345,000 Coloradans receive $719 million in tax refunds in 2011. To help increase the number of eligible families in Colorado receiving the EITC, Piton conducts the annual, statewide Tax Credits for Working Families Public Information Campaign. The foundation also publicizes the availability of free income tax preparation services for families earning less than $50,000, including its own Tax Help Colorado program. A partnership between Piton and the Colorado Community College System, Tax Help Colorado has 18 participating colleges operating 27 free tax sites in communities across the state. In 2014, Tax Help Colorado will expand its footprint by adding new tax sites at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Southwest Colorado Community College in Mancos and Fort Lewis College in Durango. A complete list of Tax Help Colorado tax sites, including dates and hours of operation, can be found here.
